Creating a Strategic Writing Instructional Plan across the Content Areas

With many schools across the country concerned about low student test scores in writing, there have been many attempts made at prioritizing writing instruction throughout the curriculum. Despite these attempts, high stakes assessments show that performance in the area of writing continues to fall below proficient for many students. The purpose of this project is to support teachers in creating a strategic writing instructional plan across the content areas and to provide students with effective writing tools that they can use in all subject areas for a variety of writing prompts. This project is divided into two parts. The first part supports teachers in creating an instructional plan that can be used, in all subject areas, to teach writing. The second part includes a variety of writing resources that students can utilize for support in completing writing tasks across all content areas and for a variety of writing purposes. This project outlines one possible strategy for improving student writing skills by providing students with frequent and ample writing practice and allowing for a transfer of information across the curriculum.
