The Impact of Inquiry-Based Science on Learning Outcomes and Language Development

As the United States demographics continue to change rapidly, statistics and trends show that underserved subgroups, such as English Learners, continue to fall behind English-only counterparts in all content areas as measured on several standardized achievement test scores. As this discrepancy in achievement deepens, as does the representation of these subgroups in college and career areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The future of these students and the future of our demographically changing nation depend on the altering of instructional practices to meet the needs of these underserved populations, and all students, while adhering to state academic standards.
