The Conjuring of Strange Curious Mischief: Twisted Retellings of Classic Children's Narratives

This creative thesis project (re) imagines the representation of female villains from four classic children's narratives, Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe through experimental poems/short stories retellings. The Critical Introduction discusses the genre of Children's Horror Literature, the representation of female villains within classic children's narratives in connection to Julia Kristeva's theory of "Abjection" and Barbra Creed's theory of the "Monstrous-Feminine," and examines the process of experimental writing.
