Methods of Supporting English Learners in Math

The purpose of this research is to examine the achievement gap amongst English Learners in year long math I. The goal is determine the effectiveness of a flipped classroom model for English Learners in math and to evaluate the benefits of pulling students out to an alternative testing environment during math tests. The subjects used in this study are ninth and tenth grade English Learners and takes place in both their math class and designated ELD class. The research includes surveys and data gathered from classes over the course of the school year. All students received the support of an alternate testing room and certain students additionally had a flipped classroom model support where their teachers recorded their lessons which were then accessible to students at any point. They were able to watch the lessons as many times as they’d like, stop, pause, and rewind, and even put on captions. Through the research and interview, the researcher determined these two strategies to be successful at increasing success and lowering the students’ affective filter. While merely scratching the surface of ways of supporting English Learners, this is the findings of these two particular strategies.
