The Effectiveness of One-to-One Devices in Student Achievement and Engagement

The intent of this study was to determine the effectiveness of one-to-one devices in student achievement and engagement in a middle school class setting. The study involved 4 teachers in an urban southern California school district, involving roughly 120 students in 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts classes. Data collection methods included observations, surveys, questionnaires, mini-interviews, and data collected from the MyData and CAASPP websites. The results of the data analysis of student engagement exhibited an average increase of 55% in 7th grade and 14% in 8th grade. In addition, 48 students achieved Standard Met in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium. Furthermore, the student learning experience became pleasant and an enjoyable experience with the integration of Chromebooks compared to traditional teacher led lessons. The results of this case study indicate that integrating technology features into lessons, may be an effective way to increase student engagement and achievement.
