First Generation Mexican Immigrants: A Qualitative Study on Barriers, Utilization, and Access to Quality Diabetes Care in San Diego county

The health status of first generation Mexican immigrants is often overlooked in healthcare research. This study conducted 5 qualitative, semi-structured interviews with first generation Mexican immigrants diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Participants were able to share their experiences in regards to utilization patterns, barriers, and quality of diabetes care received. Findings suggest a greater need to: (1) develop and provide diabetes education that is culturally relevant and accessible, and (2) encourage the Mexican immigrant community to seek out preventative care, (3) continue to advocate for healthcare reform that is inclusive of individuals regardless of immigration status. The five personal stories shared here provide a unique lens into the affect that first-generation immigration status has on the management of chronic illness.
