Exploring Registered Nurses’ Knowledge of Health-Care Associated Infections
Statement of Problem Nurses should be familiar with practices to prevent the occurrence and spread Health-Care Associated Infections. Existing literature has documented specific examples where nurses are implicated in the transmission of HAIs and The research to explore knowledge of nurses in regards to HAIs is limited. It is important to further understand overall knowledge of nurses and what predicts nurses knowledge of with regards to HAIs. Sources of Data The setting for this study was Palomar Health, a California health care district in San Diego County. The district includes Palomar Medical Center and Pomerado Hospital. The survey was emailed Registered Nurses who work at both campuses under the category of Critical Care, Telemetry, and Intermediate Care units. Conclusions Reached Registered Nurses demographic characteristics was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression was conducted to determine if level of education, years of experience, and participation in an infection control in-service predict knowledge of infection control. The mean knowledge score is 69.2 with a SD of 13.6 and a skewness of .231(n=109). There was a significant correlation between level of education and knowledge of HAIs, r = .223, p = .022. The resulting prediction equation was not significant (R=.251, F (3, 101) = 2.264; p .086). It was determined that level of education, years of experience, and participation in an infection control in-service was not significantly associated with knowledge of HAIs. Additional original research needs to be done to gain a greater understanding of the factors that can predict RNs knowledge of HAIs.
