Bullying In a Magnet versus Non-Magnet Hospital: A Pilot Study

Statement of Problem: It has been documented that at least 90% of nurses experience workplace violence (Embree, Bruner, & White, 2013). Magnet accredited hospitals have consistently been identified in the literature as “nurse friendly” cultivating a healthy work environment that promotes interdisciplinary relationships characterized by mutual respect between all disciplines (Sanders, 2010). The purpose of this study is to determine if Magnet facilities have a lower prevalence of nurse-to-nurse violence than non-magnet hospitals. Sources of Data: Purposive sampling from a Magnet and non-Magnet step down unit was utilized. Participants completed an online survey that included demographic data and the Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised (NAQ-R) (Einarsen, Hoel, & Notelaers, 2009). Conclusions Reached: Although respondents in non-Magnet hospitals reported experiencing higher levels of exposure to bullying than those working in Magnet hospitals, the difference was not statistically significant (p-value > 0.05).
